Project: The Major Oak (Robin Hood Oak

Client: The RSPB

Location: Sherwood Forest, Nottingham

The RSPB sought our expertise to assess the soilhealth of The Major Oak, a world-famous tree within a sensitive SSSI. We conducted a comprehensive soil investigation, which involved on site assessments and testing samples in our Laboratory. This informed a long-term management plan which included innovative remediation strategies that consider the tree's unique status and the surrounding ecosystem. We are working closely with the Sherwood Forest team to ensure the health of this iconic tree for years to come.

Project: Agroforestry

Client: Skylark Farm Advice and Affinity Water

Location: Hampshire

An interesting Affinity Water sponsoredAgroforestry project on a conventional arable farm to expand into anagroforestry system incorporating walnut trees. The Soil Hub designed a 10-yearsoil health monitoring program to assess the impact on the land. We collectedbaseline soil data and partnered with SoilBioLab for analysis. This will guidefuture management practices and measure the success of the agroforestry system.

Project: On-farm Soil Investigation

Client: Whitley Farms Ltd

Location: Wiltshire

An investigation into the effects on soil from extended applications of digestate.

We carried out soil sampling and determined a scope for soil tests to help the farmer to understand if the continuous use of anaerobic amendments had led to a decline in soil function in certain areas of the farm. We provided advice on improving soil health and undertook testing to support their SAM 1 SFI application.

Project: Land Contamination and Remediation

Client: Lizard Ecology

Location: West Sussex

Professional advice was needed to understand the conditions of the soil and its ecology, after years of damage from different interventions. Our team carried out a site visit and provided formal advice, based on laboratory testing of numerous samples. Additionally, the client required solutions for restoring the soil health, in an area of natural importance and our team outlined different approaches, as well as a monitoring schedule to track the progress.

Project: Applying Microbiology to Soil

Client: Howley Hall Golf Club

Location: Leeds

This forward thinking and proactive golf club needed support to help them with the challenge of moving away from chemicals and artificial inputs. The club was looking for practical methods to increase natural resilience in the soil and limit the amount of chemicals they were using. The Soil Hub sourced and built apparatus and provided the key compost ingredients to enable the Head Greenkeeper to implement a biological programme that would build a healthy microbiome within the soil and reduce instances of disease.
